Great Devotee Salabega Samadhi Peeth

Lord Jagannath is lord of universe. He is the one who created this earth and its various elements and thus no creation lies beyond the boundaries of his mercy and right to pray him. The story of Bhakt Salabega is one of the most famous stories, which proves that no one has the right over God, but the soul with our intention, devotion and faith in the lord. Caste, religion, status; all these are materialistic attributes, which may hold an importance to man, but for the lord of the world these are merely unimportant elements, for he seeks only true love, care and faith.

Salabega’s story, his songs and poems glorifying the miracles of Lord Jagannath are famous all over the place even today. After his death, his body was buried near the temple and is known as Bhakt Salabega Samadhi Peeth. The Peeth is situated at the Grand Road and can be visited by the people when they visit Puri.

Bhakt Salabega’s is a famous Odia poet, known for composing and singing some of the finest poems and songs dedicated to Lord Jagannath. Though he belonged to a Muslim family, his devotion towards Lord Jagannath held such a high regard that he is now put in the list of the most celebrated followers of Lord Jagannath.

The Great Devotee Salabega’s father was a leading warrior in Mughal army and his name was Lalbega. As per many folktales, while returning from a venture he spotted a beautiful Hindu widow and forcefully married her. Salabega was born to Lalbega and his wife, who was known as Fatima Biwi after getting married to Lalbega. From the very childhood he heard the tales and miracles of Krishna and Jagannath from his mother. All the stories fascinated him very much and he was deeply influenced by Lord Jagannath.

Among various tales that prove Salabega’s devotion and Lord’s love for Salabega, the Rathjatra’s story is a commonly heard tale. Because Salabega belonged to a Muslim family he was denied permission inside the Shree Temple. However, during Rathyatras, he would catch the glimpses of his beloved lord. One it happened that he was out of town during the festival and was about to miss this golden opportunity. He prayed to lord Jagannath to wait for him, as it was the only time of the year that he can have his darshan. Lord Jagannath, who is known to fulfill all the desires of his bhakts fulfilled the desire of Salabega and his chariot did not move an inch, till Salabega reached their to get his darshan.

Many believe that even today the Rath of Lord stops at the spot to wait for his devotees.
